Jumbo Joe Thornton scores 1000th NHL point in Phoenix

Amidst teams all over the NHL battling for playoff spots on Friday night, the San Jose Sharks watched their captain earn an individual accolade that has been thirteen and a half years in the making. Joe Thornton became the 78th player in NHL history to reach the elusive 1000 point mark in a career—and only the second to do so in a San Jose Sharks jersey (Vincent Damphousse). Ironically, the man known as one of the best playmakers of his generation netted his 306 career goal for the milestone point. Surely a perfectly set up saucer pass would have been far too predictable.

After the game, it was obvious Thornton would have preferred the victory over an individual accolade. After prodding, Joe Thornton had this to say after the game about scoring his 1000th point:

“You have to be blessed with a good supporting cast and luckily I’ve been blessed with a lot of good friends and family and good linemates and good players to play along. There are so many different variables that go into getting that many points.”

The former #1 overall pick from 1997 is in the middle of a few impressive milestones. Earlier this year, he passed teammate Patrick Marleau for the San Jose franchise record for most assists. On February 22, Jumbo Joe scored his 300th career goal. Unless he has 6 assists against the Coyotes in the season finale, Thornton will celebrate his 700th career assist early next season as well.

In 79 games this season, Thornton has posted 69 points (21 goals, 48 assists). Just as a measure of perspective, his point total is good for 24th in the NHL in scoring. Even more impressive is that these numbers represent an off-year for the #1 pivot. He managed to score his 1000th point in his 994 game—for math majors out there, that’s better than a point per game for the 14 year veteran. In fact, he currently ranks ninth in points and sixth in assists among active players.

For fans that missed it, here’s what the history making goal looked like:

With the numbers that Thornton has been able to put up in his career, it’ll be interesting to see how pundits look at his career when it’s all said and done. If he can stay healthy and continue to produce at this pace for another few years (he’s still only 31 years old), he’s going to be getting up into the elite players of all time. In just three more years at a similar pace, his statistics will be mentioned with Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, and Bobby Clarke. Of course, it’ll be a lot easier for hockey fans and historians to put him in the same conversation as those greats if he can help the Sharks win a Stanley Cup in the next few years as well.

Regardless of team success, it’s time to start talking seriously about the statistics Thornton has compiled over his career. A couple more years of this and we won’t be talking about a Hall of Famer; we’ll be talking about a first ballot Hall of Famer.

NHL Roenick part of NHL Network's All-Star coverage

Thanks to the new format for choosing sides in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game presented by Discover, it is possible members of the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers will team up at RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C., just months after battling for the Stanley Cup.

NHL Network will have a special guest analyst for All-Star Weekend with plenty of history playing for both. Jeremy Roenick, a nine-time All-Star who spent eight seasons with Chicago and three playing for Philadelphia, will join the crew breaking down the weekend -- including a one-on-one on-ice challenge with ex-NHL goaltender and colleague Kevin Weeks.

The inclusion of "JR" is just one of the highlights of All-Star Weekend coverage in Raleigh by NHL Network, NHL.com, NHL Radio and NHL Mobile.

There will also be pre- and post-draft shows Friday night on the network with Deb Placey and Heidi Androl interviewing players and their families in the green room. Captains Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom will talk strategy before the draft and the alternate captains will be interviewed afterwards for insight into the picks and to handicap the weekend.

NHL Network coverage on Saturday will include a three-hour pregame show leading up to the Honda SuperSkills with interviews from the NHL All-Star Red Carpet Show and Commissioner Gary Bettman’s State of the League news conference. There will also be a post-SuperSkills recap show.

There will be three more hours of NHL Network coverage on game day, including pre- and post-game shows from inside RBC Center with plenty of highlights and interviews.

NHL.com will have the entire weekend covered with exclusive interviews and videos on the 2011 NHL All-Star microsite. ‘Unbelievable’ Yandle added to NHL all-star game roster

Snubbed by the selection committee the first time around, Phoenix Coyotes red-hot blue-liner Keith Yandle was added to the NHL’s all-star roster on Tuesday.

He will replace injured Atlanta Thrashers defenceman Tobias Enstrom. The spot that was to be occupied by Edmonton Oilers winger Ales Hemsky will now go to Martin Havlat of the Minnesota Wild.

Oilers head coach Tom Renney said Hemsky has been on the stationary bike and he has run on the treadmill. If he continues to show signs of improvement from his concussion, he should be back in the lineup when the team hosts the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 2.

Yandle, meanwhile, will take his rightful place with the league’s elite defencemen.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Yandle’s teammate Shane Doan, “but we’ve seen it coming and talking about it as a group.

“I would say last year he was probably the best player on the ice 50 per cent of the time. This year, I’d say he’s probably the best player 75 per cent of the time. He is an elite defenceman. I’d put him up with (Mike Green of the Washington Capitals) and (the San Jose Sharks Dan Boyle), those type of players. And he’s such a great guy in our room.

“Everyone loves him.”

The 24-year-old Bostonian had put up seven goals and 33 assists in his first 49 games this season, just two shy of the venerable Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings and rolled into the game against Edmonton with a seven-game point streak.

Yandle said that having been mentored by the likes of veteran blue-liners Ed Jovanovski and Derek Morris has been invaluable. He also credits his breakout campaign to an injection of confidence in his game. That and the fact that he’s playing for Dave Tippett, a coach who stresses defence above all in his system.

“The knock on me earlier, and it still might be, is that I always wanted to get out of my zone and join the rush,” Yandle said. “Under Tip, you have to play defence first.”

Yandle spent the bulk of last season on the third pairing, but with injuries to the back end this season, he scooped up more ice time in even-strength situations and on special teams.

“We’ve had no choice but to put him out against the top lines and he’s performed very well,” said Tippett. “It’s not just the points, it’s his all-around game that has really come to the forefront. He’s got a very bright future ahead of him.”

Oilers to play spoiler role

A playoff berth might be out of reach for the Oilers, but Renney still has objectives for his charges. Following the four-day all-star break, the Oilers will have 33 games remaining — time enough, said Renney, to lay a better foundation.

“We can really determine a lot of things right now,” Renney said. “For ourselves, first and foremost, it’s about developing a reputation, an identity, a real deep commitment to what we want to be, not just right now but long term,” he said.

“Beyond that, these teams we’re playing desperately need points. We can really affect the Western Conference down the stretch with how we play and with the results that we are able to garner.”

Tape it up and put me in

In one of the practice sessions he was running earlier this week, Renney jammed his ring finger with enough force that he tore the tendon from the bone.

“I wish I could tell you what happened. I can’t remember if it hit the top of the board or I pushed a player (in a drill),” he said. “I thought I had dislocated my finger.”

Renney won’t require surgery, instead scar tissue will form and fuse the tendon.

Two doesn’t go into three

There was a time when Doan wondered if he’d ever shake the reputation of being that guy who doesn’t have an NHL hat trick. Now the Coyotes captain figures he might as well as embrace the idea.

“I’ve decided if there is a record to have, that the most two-goal games without a hat trick isn’t a bad one. There’s other records you might not want,” he said.

Doan is tied with Larry Murphy for most goals in a career without notching a hat trick. Before Tuesday’s game, he had 287 goals in 1,086 NHL games.

He has 37 two-goal games to his credit.

“You almost start to smile when you get two, and there’s a little bit of time left,” he said. “The fans here even get pretty excited.”

No need for crowd control

Despite holding down a spot in the playoff race, despite the bargains — like the $25 package that includes a seat in the upper deck, a beer and a T-shirt — the Coyotes still aren’t a big draw in the desert.

“You want atmosphere,” said Coyotes winger Paul Bissonnette. “But for our last game against L.A., we had a great crowd. And it is nice when we play Canadian cities or when we play Original Six teams. We get a lot of people for Chicago, for instance. But last week, we had maybe 5,000 people here. There were maybe 1,000 in the building for the warm-up.

“It’s a little depressing to see. If they had built the rink in Scottsdale, maybe we’d be having a different talk right now, so yeah, it’s frustrating.”

“It’s tough,” said Yandle, “especially when you go to a game in Edmonton or Montreal and it’s full for the warm-up. But our fans are coming. Since I’ve been here, the crowds have gotten a lot better.”

NHL: Calgary 3, Nashville 1

Jarome Iginla scored the go-ahead goal and Miikka Kiprusoff made 23 saves Monday in the Calgary Flames' 3-1 victory over Nashville.

Iginla's power-play marker off a quick pass from Matt Stajan with 7 minutes left in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and the Flames went on to cool off the Predators, who had won 10 of 12 coming in.

Curtis Glencross and Brendan Morrison tallied for Calgary and Kiprusoff improved his season's record to 19-18, stopping all 11 Nashville shots in the final period.

David Legwand got the Preds' only goal and Pekka Rinne turned aside 24-of-27 shots.

NHL

Penguins derrotaron 4-1 a Red Wings

NHL Penguins edge Bruins 3-2

The Bruins fought back from a 2-0 early second period deficit to knot the game up at 2-2, but Jordan Staal's goal early in the third period re-established the lead for the Pittsburgh Penguins as the B's fell 3-2 on home ice on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Bruins controlling the play early in the game, Pittsburgh got on the board first with a goal from Chris Kunitz. Matt Cooke broke into the attacking zone on the right wing and fed a cross ice pass to Jordan Staal at the left circle. Staal alertly saw Kunitz joining the play and slid the puck to him in the slot. Kunitz had a lot of net to work with and he got a piece of the puck with a one-timer attempt and it deflected off his own skate and knuckled into the net for his 15th goal of the season.

Pascal Dupuis' 9th goal of the season gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead 41 seconds into the second period. Zbynek Michalek's shot went wide right of the net and bounced off the end boards to Dupuis at the left post.

The Bruins pulled to within one on a rocket from the left point by Dennis Seidenberg at 11:28 of the second period. The fourth line of Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton's tireless work on the forecheck kept the puck in the attacking zone and led to Seidenberg's 3rd goal of the season.Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell picked up the assist on the goal. The secondary assist for Campbell represented his 100th career NHL point.

The B's struck again just 13 second later on Michael Ryder's snap shot snipe from the top of the left circle that whistled over the right shoulder of Marc-Andre Fleury for Ryder's 13th goal of the season.

Jordan Staal made it 3-2 Pittsburgh 3:25 into the third period. Tyler Kennedy dumped the puck behind Tuukka Rask's net where Matt Cooke tracked it down. Cooke's backhand pass from the trapezoid found Staal in the slot for his 2nd goal of his injury-shortened season.

The Bruins dominated play late in the game. The B's put 20 shots on goal in the final period, but could not get a puck past Marc-Andre Fleury for the equalizer.

Notes:

- Mark Recchi played in his 1,615th career NHL game, tying Larry Murphy for 7th all-time.

- Evgeni Malkin played in his 350th NHL game.

- Andrew Ference and Milan Lucic both missed this afternoon's game with upper body injuries.

- Sidney Crosby missed his 5th straight game with post-concussion symptoms.

- Gregory Campbell and Craig Adams squared off in the first period in battle of 6'0" 197 lbs forwards. Campbell unloaded several big haymakers to score the win. Adams went down to one knee, but that didn't stop Campbell from continuing to swing away.

- Steven Kampfer ran into Zdeno Chara's stick during the second period and blood started pouring from his face. The referees incorrectly saw it as a high stick from Pascal Dupuis and whistled him for a double minor. Kampfer left the game and did not return to the game. After the game, the Bruins announced that Kampfer was taken to a local hospital and has a broken nose.

- Bobby Orr was in attendance at today's game.

- Marc Savard was shaken up on a hard hit into the boards by Deryk Engelland, but able to remain in the game.

- The Bruins outshot the Penguins 46-36.

- The Bruins goal scorers (Michael Ryder and Dennis Seidenberg) recorded a co-game-high 7 shots on goal.

- Is it me or did Jack Edwards seem almost impartial, rational, and level-headed today? Maybe he doesn't turning a cranky homer until 7:00 PM.

- The Bruins battled hard today and come up on the losing end. Most of the time when the Bruins lose it is the old cliche of "we didn't play a full 60 minutes". It is hard to say that about this game.

- Craig Adams' 4 fighting majors on the season leave him 13 behind fellow Ivy Leaguer George Parros (league-leading 17 fighting majors).

- There were several reports from Bruins beat writers on Twitter that Johnny Boychuk challenged Matt Cooke to fight, but Cook decline the invitation. Marc Savard had a few digs at Cooke as a result [WEEI's DJ Bean] [CSNNE's Joe Haggerty]

- The B's are back in action on Monday afternoon for a MLK Day matinee with the Carolina Hurricanes.

NHL: Rangers end Canucks win streak

The Vancouver Canucks suffered their first regulation-time defeat in 18 games, beaten 1-0 by the New York Rangers in the NHL on Thursday.

The league-leading Canucks hadn’t lost before overtime since Dec. 5, but came out losers this time in the only meeting of these two sides this season.

Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves while the sole goal came from Wojtek Wolski, acquired this week from Phoenix. He knocked in a rebound on the power play at 7:18 of the second period.

COYOTES 5, MAPLE LEAFS 1

In Glendale, Arizona, Shane Doan scored the first of four third-period goals that pushed Phoenix to a comfortable win over Toronto.

Radim Vrbata, Taylor Pyatt, Lauri Korpikoski and Keith Yandle also scored as the Coyotes made it five wins from six games.

Toronto’s Colby Armstrong got his team’s sole goal with 3:52 left as the Leafs’ winning streak stopped at four.

OILERS 5, SHARKS 2

In San Jose, rookie star Taylor Hall scored twice to help Edmonton defeat San Jose.

Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves while Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Linus Omark also scored Edmonton, who had lost their previous three on the road.

Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe scored power-play goals for the Sharks, who have lost six straight overall — their worst skid in 15 years — and also have dropped six in a row at home.

SENATORS 6, ISLANDERS 4

In Uniondale, New York, Ottawa snapped a six-game winless streak by defeating fellow struggler New York.

Robin Lehner made 20 saves in his first NHL start, while Daniel Alfredsson, Jesse Winchester, Milan Michalek, Chris Kelly, Nick Foligno and Zack Smith all found the net for Ottawa.

Trevor Gillies, Blake Comeau, P.A. Parenteau and Milan Jurcina scored for New York.

BRUINS 7, FLYERS 5

In Boston, the hosts piled on five goals in the third-period to overwhelm Philadelphia.

In a game that featured five lead changes, Brad Marchand tied it 5-5 and Steve Kampfer gave the Bruins the lead for good when he slapped in a shot that went inside the right post past a stunned Brian Boucher. Gregory Campbell added an empty-net goal to cap the scoring.

Rangers snap Canucks' streak

Wojtek Wolski scored his first goal as a Ranger, Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves, and New York beat visiting Vancouver, 1-0, on Thursday night to end the Canucks' 17-game unbeaten streak in regulation time.

The NHL-best Canucks (28-9-6) hadn't lost before overtime since Dec. 5. They were 14-0-3 before meeting the Rangers for the only time this season. Lundqvist made a point-blank save on Alexandre Burrows in the closing seconds to help the Rangers (26-16-3) improve to a season-best 10 games over .500.

Elsewhere: Cody McCormick scored the go-ahead goal, got into a fight, and drew a key penalty in Buffalo's 3-2 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. Ryan Miller made 27 saves in cooling a Hurricanes offense that had 15 goals in its previous three games. . . . Robin Lehner made 20 saves in his first NHL start to help the Ottawa Senators snap a six-game winless streak with a 6-4 victory over the New York Islanders in Uniondale, N.Y. Lehner was called up for the third time this season. . . . Florida's David Booth broke a tie with 4 minutes, 12 seconds remaining, and the Panthers held on to beat Nashville, 3-2, in Sunrise, Fla., snapping the Predators' winning streak at six games. Rostislav Olesz had a goal and an assist for Florida.

Hat trick No. 2 for Ryan

Bobby Ryan tends to score goals in bunches, which can be good and bad for Anaheim over time.

It was all good for Ryan on Wednesday night.

Three goals gave him his second hat trick this season, and it powered the Ducks to a 7-4 win over St. Louis to close out a critical homestand in which they took five of six games.

As cold as he was in December, Ryan suddenly has turned it on in January. The former Cherry Hill resident scored six times during the Ducks' current three-game winning streak. He has 21 goals for the season.

"I certainly wasn't hot for quite some time," Ryan told the Orange County Register. "To be on the other side of things and have the ball rolling in the right direction is a huge benefit for me."

Personnel moves

Dallas traded left winger Fabian Brunnstrom to Toronto for right winger Mikhail Stefanovich in an exchange of minor-league players that saves money for the Stars.

Phoenix recalled forward Mikkel Boedker from its AHL affiliate in San Antonio.
