The New England Revolution overcame an early Eric Hassli goal to beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
Games don't start much hotter than this one. Five minutes in Hassli opened the scoring. Sebastien Le Toux centered a ball from the edge of the box after being sprung by a Davide Chiumiento through ball, and Hassli six-holed Matt Reis with a one-time shot.
A minute later, Lee Nguyen equalized. The Vietnamese-American was cut before playing a game for Vancouver this offseason, so the strike -- a scrappy finish with the ball bouncing around in the box -- carried a little extra mustard in the form of revenge.
By halftime goals from Saer Sene (assisted by Nguyen) and Shalrie Joseph gave the host a cushioned lead.
In the second half Nguyen scored a stunning 25-yard volley that arced perfectly over the rooted Joe Cannon and sealed the game.
